[guide title="Wolf Behavior"]

[tit]Introduction:[/tit]
[box]This guide will help you understand the life behaviors of a wolf and their pack life! [/box]

[tit]Diet[/tit]
[box]Wolves will eat a variety of animals, depending on what is in the region they live. They are also opportunistic eaters, which means, they won't pass up smaller prey like rabbits, domestic livestock, or already dead animals for that matter. Adult wolves eat between 5 to 14 pounds of meat a day, but sometimes they will last weeks between meals. Wolf hunts are only successful 3-14% of the time, so whenever they do get a hold of something, they will eat up to 20 pounds of meat, devouring the whole carcass.[/box]

[tit]Communication[/tit]
[box]Wolves are very social creatures and use a lot of signals between each other, both physical and vocal.

#* Facial Expressions:

Dominant Behavior: Bared teeth, ears erect, direct eye contact with others
Subordinate Behavior: Closed mouths, slit-lie eyes, ears back close to the head

#* Body Expressions:

Dominant behavior: High raised tails
Subordinate Behavior: Low tails, usually tucked between the legs

#* Scenting: Mark boundaries of territories, to mark food ownership, to act like a road map for the pack [NOTE text="Wolves produce scent from glands between their toes!"]

#* Vocal Behavior: (Consists of howls, whines, growls and barks.) Wolves may howl to assemble a pack, claim territory, warn others to stay away, identify other wolves, looking for a mate. A howl can range between a half a second to 11 seconds, and the pitch can remain constant or vary smoothly. Dominant wolves tend to have deeper howls and howl more frequently.

[tit]Reproduction[/tit]
[box]Generally only the Dominants of the pack will mate having one litter of pups per year, unless the younger wolves decide to breed. [NOTE text="We don't follow this rule in LTW. xD You are welcome to have your own litter if you meet the guidelines required."] The mating season usually last between January and March; wolves begin breeding around 2 and 3 years of age. Once reaching this age, some wolves set out on their to start their own packs or join existing packs.

Pups are born blind and deaf after a 63 day gestation period. Average litter size is between 4 -6. For the first 3 weeks, the pups eat every 4 to 6 hours, and after 8 weeks, the pups are weaned and are eating semi-solid foods. At 6-8 months they start traveling with the pack.

Few wolves last longer than 5 years, but if conditions are good, they can last up to 15 years. [/box]
